The 44 stories contained in this collection have been told at the Minnesota Men’s Conference as a fundamental part of each gathering. The conference was founded in 1984 by Minnesota poet and author
Robert Bly and was inspired by his work with the fairy tale, Iron John. Robert sensed that something significant was lacking in the lives of men and he recognized that a connection with something deep and old had been broken. Hearing a folk tale that had been preserved for generations in the oral tradition, and exploring it in the community of others, activates the deep soulful imagination in those present.
Within these storied images, seeds are waiting to sprout. Sharing these stories over the years, we discovered that they have always been alive, awaiting voices to bring them to a new flowering. All that is needed are the ears, imaginations, and hearts of all who choose to listen. There are many new voices now working with mythic stories.
